The politically charged new mixed-media installation works by Ngaahina Hohaia in Everything is Honky-Dory continue to explore a discourse of colonisation and cultural collision in Aotearoa New Zealand. Her work is a firm assertion of mana tangata whenua.
Ngaahina Hohaia is of Taranaki (Parihaka), Greek and Irish descent. She has recently relocated to Auckland, and is currently completing her Masters degree in Maori Visual Arts through Massey University. Her multi-media poi installation Paopaokitua o rangi was exhibited at City Gallery Wellington last year for the opening of the new Deane Gallery dedicated to Maori and Pacific artists.
In 2009 Ngaahina travelled to Sweden with her work in the group show FibraSpirare showcasing New Zealand fibre and textile artists.
